I just had an awesome trip to Oklahoma (this trip was much needed)! It started with about a 6 hour drive from Hamilton, TX to Tonkawa, OK. I was hunting on a piece of property that Darrell and I bought a couple of years ago. We bought the place, because Grant County borders Kansas (which means good bucks).
First morning we slipped in before daylight and hung our Ol'Man Treestands (www.olmanoutdoors.com) in our north wind spot. Before it was even light enough to shoot we had a doe come down the exact trail we were hunting. About an hour later we heard some deer blowing behind us in the wheat field. I finally spotted 3 does running across the field away from us. Next thing I know I spot this buck coming through the timber heading our direction. Evidently he heard the does blowing and thought he would come check out the situation (probably wanting to check out the does since this is the last week in Oct.and the rut is just around the corner). He got to the edge of the timber and actually caught our wind, but our Scent Blocker (www.ScentBlocker.com) kept our scent down enough that he came on in and gave us a 15 yard shot. I love watching my Firenock disappear behind the shoulder.
The buck went about 100 yards and piled up. I was pumped! My first bow kill of 2007 and my first Oklahoma buck. He was what I call a "Cull Buck". He had 4 points on one side and a big spike on the other.
A couple of days later we were able to move our Ol'Man treestands to our south wind set up. It started off as a slow evening until I got a glimpse of a Bobcat moving through some thick timber. Then right at last light I heard footsteps. Finally I spotted a small buck coming my way. He was in the process of crossing a creek when he stopped and turned around. I then spotted the 2nd buck. A much nicer buck. He came down the same trail and came on across the creek. As soon as he made it up on my side of the creek he was within 25 yards. I drew back when he turned broadside and SMOKED HIM!! He ran back across the creek and crashed in a brush pile. I could not believe it!! He ended up being a nice Oklahoma 9 pt. What a trip.
