My First Bull

I got my first bull elk. He was a 5x5 and I got him on the 7th morning of our 8 day Oregon elk hunt. We actually heard this bull from our camp the night before. That made it easy for me to decide where to go the next morning.

The morning came and we loaded up and drove as far as we could to get around where we thought the bull would be. There was a tree that had fell over and was blocking the road so we got out to see if we could hear any bugles. Within 5 minutes we heard a bugle that sounded like he was only about 200 yards up the hill. After waiting for a little more light, Jaris (our guide) started cow calling. That got the bull fired up, but he did not seem like he was getting closer. Jaris then decided to let out a bugle and the bull decided to round up his cows and head the other way. Joe (camera man) and I were on the chase. About 2 hours later and a rough mile or so of walking we got a 30 yard shot at the bull and we made it count. He ran 25 yards and was finished. I finally got my first bull!

Jaris , Darrell, and Stephen (other field producer and camera guy) had given up on us and went back to camp. After a long 3 to 4 mile walk Joe and I had time to think of a good "story" to tell everyone back at camp. We got back and told them we had shot a cow. They were happy, but you could tell they would of been happier if I would of got the bull. It was a pleasant surprise for them to walk over the hill and see horns sticking up. I was a rewarding end to a long physical trip.
